Plan your visit

What I really love about this area is there are plenty of great ways to spend your time. You could plan an entire trip and never need to leave this area of Germany. Some of the more popular activities include river cruises, wine tasting, or hiking / cycling in the surrounding countryside.

castles, castles, and more castles!

The Rhine is lined with not only castle hotels but castle ruins and mighty fortresses. In fact, The Upper Valley of the Rhine has over 20 castles, most of which are open for touring.

River Cruises

There’s nothing quite like experiencing a leisurely cruise on the beautiful Rhine while taking in the breathtaking views. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley region, also known as the Rhine Gorge, has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its cultural significance and outstanding beauty. The 65 km stretch of the middle Rhine Valley between Bingen/Rüdesheim and Koblenz is often referred to as the most scenic section of the Rhine and happens to be the location for some of the best castles on the River! add it to your Germany bucket list!

Boat trip tour operators offer short trips on the most scenic section of the Rhine that pass several of the best Rhine River Castles! If you’re looking for something longer you can book multi-day cruises too! Just a few options include:

If you are looking for a short but sweet cruise on the Rhine River, head to Bacharach. The KD Boat (Koln-Dusseldorer) offers a round-trip cruise from Bacharach to Sankt Goar, a good option for a short 45 minute each way pleasant and relaxing ride down the river. There’s a boat stop in Sankt Goar where you’ll have a 2-hour and 20-minute layover, enough time to visit Rheinfels ruins and grab some lunch. There’s also a cruise that leaves from Rudesheim (just down the road) that includes wine tasting.

Wine Tasting and Wine Festivals

The Rhine Valley has been a wine growing hub since Roman times. The lower slopes were used for growing grapes until the 10th century when vineyards were expanded to the upper slopes, creating the terraced vineyards you see today. (UNESCO) The Rhine River valley is known for its excellent wines, and castle hotels offer guests the chance to sample some of the best. Many hotels have their own vineyards and wineries.

Wine festivals are a popular activity in this area, known for its “Ice Wine” which gets its name from grapes which survived a frost in 1830. Here are a few of the best wine festivals in this region:

  • Rheingau Wine Week, Wiesbaden: August is wine festival time in the spa town of Wiesbaden.
  • Vintners’ Festival of Bingen: The 11 days wine festival in Bingen is held in the month of September.
  • Red Wine Festival, Ingelheim: Ingelsheim’s wine festival takes place on the last weekend in September, where they’ll show you that Germany is known for not just its white, but also its red wines.
  • Mainz Wine Market: Mainz is known as Germany’s Great Wine capital. The last week of August / first week of September the Mainz Wine Market takes over the town square.

Eltz Castle

While in the area you’ll want to be sure to make a visit to Burg Eltz Castle, one of Germany’s most iconic. You’ll find medieval Eltz castle in the Moselle River Valley, surrounded by a dense fairy forest. It’s a magical setting!

Explore the adorable villages that line the banks of the Rhine

Visitors can experience the rich history of the area by exploring its adorable little villages. Here are two of my favorites!

  • Bacharach: Cute little Bacharach has remnants of a town wall that once protected the small village from invaders. Stop for refreshments at one of these atmospheric restaurants: Posthof Bacharach Restaurant and Altes Haus, the oldest house in town (1368) You’ll want to be sure to get a photo of Marktturm (market tower.)
  • Sankt Goar: Sankt Goar sits in the shadow of Rheinfels castle. The castle ruins are worth touring but the real attraction is the town itself.

Best Time to Visit

When is the best time to visit castle hotels on the Rhine River?

Summer is peak season: Summer months (June to August) offer long days of daylight and are popular for outdoor activities, festivals, and sightseeing. However, this is also peak tourist season, which means higher prices and larger crowds.

Winter. Winter (December to February) can be cold and dark, but has a certain charm and winter sports are popular this time of year. December is Christmas Market season in Germany, a magical time to visit. Outside of the Christmas market season you can expect to find lower prices in winter. However, be aware that many of the castles close in the winter months, and many attractions may not be accessible.

Shoulder season: Both Spring (April to May) and fall (September to October) are considered shoulder seasons. These months offer mild weather, lower prices than the summer season, and fewer tourists. I believe this is the best time to visit Germany.

No matter when you decide to travel, be sure to book your stay well in advance to avoid disappointment and don’t forget to check for deals. Many castle hotels offer special deals and packages, check the official castle website for more information.

Getting around

It is relatively easy to get around this area of Germany, and this area is fairly easy to get to. Bingen is just 58 kilometers from Frankfurt International Airport, and 62 km from Frankfurt Hahn Airport.

by car

I like to drive when traveling in Germany. It gives me the freedom to make my way around at my own pace. It’s easy to drive in Germany, just learn the rules of the road and study up on those road signs!

by train or by bus

Public Transportation options are plentiful in Germany.
You can plan your bus and train travel at the Deutsche Bahn (DB) website or on their app. Check their website for transit schedules (including bus schedules), maps, info on rail passes, and to purchase train tickets. Buses are slower but cheaper, check Rome2Rio to plan bus travel.
